heard and heard again

11 October, 2009 (07:43) | photography, TTV photography, cemetery, collin county | No comments

I thought I published this last week when I shot it. Ah, well. The brain gets rusty.
I dusted off my old Argoflex and taped it to the tripod before I went out shooting. Can’t decide if it’s more or less of a hassle to have it rigged that way. The light was really nice […]

shooting anna

I went to Anna a few days ago specifically to shoot this sign. I thought it might have been an old Dairy Queen sign that had been repainted, but my little brother, the expert, thinks it’s a one-of-a-kind. I didn’t know if it was still an operating business (it is); I just kept thinking, […]

standing at the crossroads, sun is sinking down

I’ve been just sick enough this week so I don’t do much more than consume tea and orange juice and stay glued to my soft chair, knees covered with a blanket. I read, or surf the internet, or cut up magazines. Every now and then I’ll get up and tidy the room a little bit, […]

abandoned ranch

14 January, 2009 (10:30) | history, collin county, architecture, Texas | No comments

Lately when the weather’s nice on my day off I’ve taken to exploring Collin County again. I know it’s a frivolous waste of gas, but it’s cheaper than going to the movies or eating out. It’s one of my luxuries in life. This was one of the signs at an old ranch outside Melissa, about […]

snow before the snow

30 November, 2008 (10:38) | Seasons, collin county | No comments

It’s snowing yellow leaves today. They pour down first gently, then spin into eddies, skittering down the street. The brittle droppings of oak and pecan and hackberry accrue into drifts of yellow along the curb until another gust of wind scatters them to the four corners of the county.
Winter’s on its way.
I’m spared the chore […]

gentle dragon

Green Clearwing Dragonfly
I’m fascinated by bugs, especially when I can view one close up. I don’t know why I grew up disliking them, or why I was terrified of spiders. (I still despise cockroaches, though.) Is it a Western cultural thing to see insects and reptiles as evil things? It seems most of the aliens […]

never eat anything larger than your head

Squirrel with pecan. I’ve heard people saying it’s going to be a cold winter in North Texas, but really, Senor Squirrel, is that any excuse to stuff your face this way? And Dude, your oral hygiene sucks. Brush those teeth once in a while. Eeeeew!

the positive aspects of boredom

13 April, 2008 (11:04) | collin county, Books, water tower, McKinney | No comments

yeah, I know it’s a boring picture. We spent the last two weeks of exile in a local motel. Our window looked out onto a Jeep dealership and we spent a lot of time watching cars coming in and out of a service bay, and employees taking smoke breaks next to it. This was accompanied […]

corinth cemetery

13 February, 2008 (10:52) | cemetery, collin county | No comments

I returned to this almost-abandoned cemetery over the weekend. The thick foliage from last summer had been mowed down, probably with a good-sized tractor. The corner of the lovely metal fence had been opened and was bent down; someone didn’t care enough to put it together again. The plants that were mown have dried to […]

Ghost Rider

20 December, 2007 (12:20) | collin county | No comments

“Tragedy is no stranger to the family of Preston Gleason, 21, of Anna.
Preston died Tuesday in an accident in McKinney at the intersection of Alma Drive and State Highway 121. McKinney Police Department officials said a tractor-trailer ran a red light and collided with Preston’s motorcycle.”
(from The Dallas Morning News - Aug 16, 2007)
