Actually white-wing doves. Click to see a larger pic of their pretty faces. We have a group of about 20. They’re SO much smarter than the mourning doves we always saw in Dallas. These guys have been clever enough to figure out how to eat from every bird feeder in our back yard. I don’t […]

winter visitors

24 January, 2010 (10:54) | Fauna, Seasons, birds | No comments

We had a few beautiful balmy days, so I went over to the little lake nearby to check on the 20-30 Canada geese that are spending the winter there. They’re so stately, yet gentle creatures. I coaxed a few of them to take bird seed out of my hand. What a thrill. Of course one […]

Four Calling Birds

You lookin’ at ME?
The goldfinches are back! We saw what we think may have been a scout a few weeks ago, and when we had a brief cold snap, the whole gang arrived. There are at least six of them. Sometimes they’re all on this feeder at the same time!

a last look before leaving

The hummingbirds have been tanking up at the feeder and at the Turk’s Cap blossoms, but we haven’t seen them today. We knew it was almost time for them to fly south to their winter quarters on the other side of the Gulf of Mexico, but it’s always sad when they finally disappear. Usually the […]

“Imagine a dish like this married to a mug like Benny McBride. The naked and the dead” (Detective Danny Ryan, Armored Car Robbery, 1950.
“What I like about you is you’re rock bottom. I wouldn’t expect you to understand this, but it’s a great comfort for a girl to know she could not possibly sink any […]

It’s been such a warm and glorious autumn in McKinney this year. We’ve had almost no rain, which isn’t good, but I have been enjoying the sunny days tremendously. One night there was a dusting of frost in a few places, but the days remain balmy. Every few days I wonder how much longer it […]

tiny garden denizens

Above: Ruby Throated Hummingbird (female or immature male) — Below: Asian Tiger Mosquito

The hummingbirds don’t seem to visit our feeders when they’re stationed close to the house, so I don’t often get a chance to photograph one. This little cutie pie stayed motionless just long enough for me to get a couple of […]

pink flamingos invade McKinney

15 May, 2008 (08:27) | birds | No comments

The first pink-feathered monsters arrived last Monday. We thought they were stragglers from a northern migration seeking refuge from the hurricane-like winds that had been beating the sky lately. Four of them grazed in the front yard of the old house that’s being painted beige and grey. We figured it was the smell of […]

STAR (ling) WARS

We put out the last suet cake for the birds during the cold spell last week. Some of our favorite birds, the woodpeckers, chickadees and finches love the suet and seed concoction. Unfortunately, so do the “nuisance” birds: the starlings. They are virtual pigs when it comes to suet. I got a few shots of […]
