a last look before leaving

The hummingbirds have been tanking up at the feeder and at the Turk’s Cap blossoms, but we haven’t seen them today. We knew it was almost time for them to fly south to their winter quarters on the other side of the Gulf of Mexico, but it’s always sad when they finally disappear. Usually the birds instantly fly away when they see the big glass eye of my camera lens staring at them, but this juvenile hesitated just long enough for me to squeeze off a quick portrait.
bye, cutie pie! See you next year!
