the other white meat

Kinda how I feel about the bailout. Yeah, it’s a huge chunk of money, but will we be able to recognize our little bit when we see it? And will it be in a form that we can take bites out of? Or will it just be an oddity we don’t know what to with?

ps brush collage

26 February, 2009 (09:15) | photoshop, collage | No comments

I had some down time at work yesterday, and I didn’t have my laptop (missed Twitter), so I was surfing the web looking for some Photoshop tutorials. Along the way I found Brusheezy, which has a fabulous collection of Free brushes you can add to your Photoshop Library. I particularly liked the ones listed under […]

more collage

I have a bad habit of collecting clipped pieces from ads or magazines. I see something that I think has potential for a collage, so I cut it out, file it in a shoe box and forget about it. Somehow my small investment of time, of selecting, brainstorming, and cutting with scissors results in a […]

shooting anna

23 February, 2009 (11:13) | my brain on drugs, photography, Texas Towns, collin county, architecture | 1 comment

I went to Anna a few days ago specifically to shoot this sign. I thought it might have been an old Dairy Queen sign that had been repainted, but my little brother, the expert, thinks it’s a one-of-a-kind. I didn’t know if it was still an operating business (it is); I just kept thinking, […]

public and private

21 February, 2009 (16:19) | art, what horrors has civilization wrought, collage | No comments

After fooling around with digital collage in Photoshop yesterday, my hands were twitching for the feel of cold steel scissors and sticky acrylic adhesive. Maybe I’m thinking about privacy issues too much, because this is one of the things my fingers pulled out of my brain.

femme fatale circa 1938

Do Brains go with Beauty? Do Thrills go with Romance?
YES…..in MYRA NORTH, Special Nurse

I stumbled across this little noir comic strip while I was poking around the archives of the Dallas Newspaper. I “clipped” these panels because I liked the artist’s style; reminded me of old Dick Tracy and Li’l Orphan Annie comic […]

The Cardboard Studio

16 February, 2009 (11:21) | DIY, photography | No comments

I’ve always shied away from using artificial lighting in my photos. I think it started with the temporary blindness I incurred as a child after facing the pop of exploding flashbulbs. Then there were the dreadful red-eye shots I took of my friends in high school with an Instamatic 100, with its flash cube that […]

happy valentine’s: love is for suckers

“Imagine a dish like this married to a mug like Benny McBride. The naked and the dead” (Detective Danny Ryan, Armored Car Robbery, 1950.
“What I like about you is you’re rock bottom. I wouldn’t expect you to understand this, but it’s a great comfort for a girl to know she could not possibly sink any […]

the contraption

13 February, 2009 (14:52) | TTV photography, architecture, McKinney | No comments

A much better result utilizing my cardboard contraption. I reallly like the vignette created by the dirt on the lens, and that old 1960s era sign just borders on the surreal. At least my brain thinks so.
Here are some photos of the “contraption.” It’s just a piece of  cardboard that I’ve scored so […]
