snow before the snow

It’s snowing yellow leaves today. They pour down first gently, then spin into eddies, skittering down the street. The brittle droppings of oak and pecan and hackberry accrue into drifts of yellow along the curb until another gust of wind scatters them to the four corners of the county.

Winter’s on its way.

I’m spared the chore of putting up Christmas lights this year because we have no outside electrical outlet. The carpenters removed the old fixture when they rebuilt the front porch, and the electrician left only the ends of wires on the underside of the roof where a porch light should be. It’s up to me to install a fixture there, and it’s one of those chores I haven’t got to yet. We’ve had an unusually warm and sunny autumn, and I haven’t had any excuse not to do home projects. I’ve been doing them more grudgingly, though, as I’d really prefer to get back to creative but not exactly useful projects. I’m really tired of working on the house.
