textured rubbings and smoke in your eyes

I’ve been practicing drawing a bit. These characters are about the best I can do when trying to draw human heads. I’ve been copying some faces from the daily comic strips hoping to come up with something with more dimension. It’s been nice to finally find my art pens and some of my journals to play around with. I’ve also been playing with my crayons to make backgrounds by rubbing over different textured items. Thanks goes to Hanna’s post about . It came at just the right time, when I had finally located my old boxes of crayons. I’ve also had good results using my cheap colored pencils to rub in some texture. I used the papers I was playing with and finally put together the first collage in a while that I’m pretty happy with.

I called it “Smoke gets in your eyes” to commemorate how I feel when I drive by all the bulldozers flattening the previously juniper-and-mesquite-covered hill near the building where I work. I’ve seen one dead bobcat and at least two dead rabbits on the streets just during the past week. Their woodsy brushy habitat was razed inside of a week and they have no place to go.

Copying faces from cartoons or comics is a great way to learn how to draw. I know that all of my first drawings were drawings of my favorite cartoon characters, fanart. It is a fun way to learn how to draw and it teaches you the proportions and depths that are present in the human face. Then, all you need to do to turn the cartoon faces realistic, is learn not to exaggerate the features and learn to shade well.
Your drawings are looking good. If you can do this now, then with a little practice you will be great.
Also, I love “Smoke gets in your eyes” piece. Very original and it has a great theme. I hate pollution.
