adventures in orange

What is orange?
An orange is orange.
A carrot is orange.
Pumpkins are are orange.
Pomegranate blossoms are orange.

You can’t rhyme with orange.
Turns out, you can’t match orange, either.

My mom decided she wanted orange trim in her yellow bedroom. We brought home numerous chip charts from local paint and diy stores.

We had Orange Ice, Navel, Mandarin, and Jack O’Lantern.
We had Pumpkin, Pumpkin Burst, and Pumpkin Custard.
We had Stirring Orange, Energetic Orange, Forceful Orange, Raucous Orange, and Laughing Orange.

The Orange might have been laughing, but after two weeks of this we weren’t. Not a single swatch matched my mom’s idea of orange. She finally produced an orange business card she thought was the ideal orange (can you pick it out in the above shot?). The guy at the paint store just shook his head. There was no way he could mix anything even close to that card; I guess his scanner would go berserk looking at it. I looked at the paint swatches in the store one more time and just picked one. Again, the guy shook his head. The color proportions were difficult; he could mix a gallon, but not the quart I wanted for testing. I told him to mix whatever swatch he could to make a quart. He complied. My mom was happy.

The color, appropriately enough, was Obstinate Orange.
