the positive aspects of boredom

yeah, I know it’s a boring picture. We spent the last two weeks of exile in a local motel. Our window looked out onto a Jeep dealership and we spent a lot of time watching cars coming in and out of a service bay, and employees taking smoke breaks next to it. This was accompanied by the constant cackling and whistling of grackles at the height of mating season. On the back side of the motel was the view of this field, where I took Phoebe, my sweetiepie, for her daily walks. I was lucky to be able to go to work five days out of seven, but on my two days off we spent a lot of time in this field. I found 3 golf balls of different makes, many broken bottles, and a grackle skull (serves ‘em right for waking me up every day).

I re-discovered the pleasure of checking out stacks of books from the library. Since I was anticipating redecorating my house I brought home a lot of books on design. One of the best ones I read was A Book About Design: Complicated Doesn’t Make It Good by Mark Gonyea. The blurb on Amazon says it’s meant for Ages 9-12, but I think it’s a great book for adults, as well. It’s going to be on my gift-giving list for friends of all ages. Forget the color wheel and hue theory - these are the A, B, C’s that stick with me in my quest for the perfect living room. I may even have to write a book called, “All I ever needed to know about design I learned from Mark Gonyea.”
