This is the front door of a bed-and-breakfast, still in halloween regalia, lace-mistakethat’s up for sale about six blocks from our house. I love the front door of this house, probably because the back door to my house has some of the very same detailing that dates it to about 1890. The details include the horizontal “mini sill” along the bottom of the glass pane and the dentil molding below that (molding that looks like little teeth stretching horizontally) and the matching molding/dentil work at the top of the door. Also the indented panel beneath the glass. Don’t get the idea my house looks anything like this!lace-mistakeMine’s just a plain farm house and not a fraction as grand as this, but since I’ll be having some work done, I’m constantly scouting the area looking for the details that “date” the houses so I can keep my renovation ideas in historical context. It’s not so easy when your house is a hodge-podge of different eras.
