Studio Friday: The Beginning

This week’s topic on Studio Friday was a fun one for me, and it has a double meaning, as I’m “beginning” to get back to my blogging routine, which includes these Friday sessions.
I dug out an old notebook I saved from high school and realized a couple of things about my art.
First, I was making Art Journals before Art Journaling had acquired a name. I had some colored markers and I just drew and wrote over my class notes in study hall after I was finished with them. I made observations of classmates, cited quotes or song lyrics I liked, and wrote poems and one-page stories.
Second, I see the roots of collage with my clipped out newspaper headlines rearranged to tell a new story. I still love making up things with clipped copy.
Finally, I see that I was more willing to experiment with sketching, poetry, and fiction than I am now. Looking at my “roots” has been fun.
Happy Weekend!

These are great roots!! I had files of mind minds and other visualisations of my A-Level and University work I have lost along the way that I wish I still had…I am envious!

Oh, yes I remember scribbling on the sides of my school papers as well, especially when it was a boring class! Thanks for sharing your first ‘journal pages’! ![]()

Oh! that was fun to read! You are right - that would be the roots of art journaling; wouldn’t it? It was fun to see your grades on the same piece of paper; gave me pause to recall papers I had tossed in the past.
