A Fork-tailed Bush Katydid I spied in the grass. I don’t know if it’s lost its wings or if they’ve yet to grow. And a song from World War I to go with it Here
It was a good week for spotting new critters. Monday night my co-worker and I spotted three, yes three! Great Horned Owls from the parking lot. For a city girl who’s rarely seen owls this was a big deal. They were Who-Hoo-ing softly, like doves. I never realized how quietly they speak. One was perched on the warehouse and one was on a light pole across the field. A second owl joined the one on the pole, so there were three. Last night we spotted a toad in the parking lot. And there are always at least two or three geckos stuck to the sides of the concrete walls near the front door. I guess we are seeing these smaller night creatures because many of the mammals are disappearing from the area. This last year has seen a great boom in construction in the area and we haven’t seen any skunks, opossums or rabbits as in previous years. Another sad time for wildlife.
We think we have two kinds of hummingbirds: ruby-throated & black-chinned, but I have yet to get a good photo of one. Today I saw a Baltimore Oriole on the feeder - first one I have ever seen in North Texas.
